Fearfully and Wonderfully Made: A Biblical View of Life's Value

Hey Guys,

The sanctity of human life is a fundamental truth woven throughout Scripture. It is rooted in the understanding that all people are created in the image of God, imago Dei, and are fearfully and wonderfully made by their Creator (Psalm 139:14). This truth compels Christians to honor, cherish, and defend life at every stage, particularly the unborn, who are among the most vulnerable in our society.

When Does Life Begin?
The Bible speaks clearly about the beginning of life. It teaches that life does not start at birth or even viability outside the womb but at conception, when God begins His creative work.

  1. God's Knowledge of Us Before Birth
In Jeremiah 1:5, God declares to the prophet, "Before I formed you in the womb, I knew you, and before you were born, I consecrated you." This verse reveals that God’s relationship with each person begins even before physical life takes shape in the womb. His intimate knowledge and purpose for every individual precede human understanding.
  2. The Formation of Life in the Womb
David reflects on God’s handiwork in Psalm 139:13-16, proclaiming:
"For You formed my inward parts; You wove me in my mother’s womb. I will give thanks to You, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made; Wonderful are Your works, and my soul knows it very well. My frame was not hidden from You, when I was made in secret, and skillfully formed in the depths of the earth; Your eyes have seen my formless substance; and in Your book were written all the days that were ordained for me, when as yet there was not one of them."
These verses vividly describe God as the master artisan, knitting each person together with intentionality and care. Life in the womb is not an accident of nature but a sacred act of God’s creation.
  3. The Example of Jesus Christ
The incarnation of Jesus further underscores the sanctity of life before birth. In Luke 1:41-44, the unborn John the Baptist leaps in his mother Elizabeth’s womb at the presence of the unborn Jesus. This moment affirms the personhood and spiritual awareness of both children even before they were born.

Why Defend Life?
The sanctity of human life is under constant attack in our modern culture. Abortion, euthanasia, and other threats to human dignity challenge the biblical view of life’s value. Christians must stand firm in defending life because:
  1. Life is a Gift from God
All life belongs to God because He is the Creator (Genesis 1:27). To devalue or destroy life is to reject God’s sovereign role as the giver and sustainer of life.
  2. Every Life Reflects God's Image
Genesis 1:27 reminds us, "God created man in His own image, in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them." Every person, regardless of stage, ability, or circumstances, bears God’s image and is worthy of protection and dignity.
  3. We Are Called to Defend the Helpless
Proverbs 31:8-9 commands, "Open your mouth for the mute, for the rights of all the unfortunate. Open your mouth, judge righteously, and defend the rights of the poor and needy." Defending life, especially the unborn who cannot speak for themselves, is a biblical mandate.
  4. God Values the Vulnerable
Throughout Scripture, God demonstrates His care for the weak and vulnerable (Psalm 68:5; Isaiah 1:17). As His people, we are called to follow His example in protecting those who cannot protect themselves.

A Call to Action
Defending the sanctity of life begins with a firm understanding of Scripture and a commitment to live out God’s truth. Here are practical ways to stand for life:
  1. Pray for an End to Abortion
Seek God’s intervention for the protection of unborn children and for hearts to be changed in our culture.
  2. Support Pro-Life Ministries
Partner with organizations that provide resources, counseling, and support to women facing unplanned pregnancies.
  3. Educate and Advocate
Share the biblical truth about life’s value with your family, church, and community. Stand for life in conversations, policies, and actions.
  4. Show Compassion and Grace
Extend love and support to women who have experienced abortion, offering the hope and healing found in Christ.

Conclusion
The sanctity of human life is not just a theological concept; it is a divine reality that calls us to action. Life begins at conception, as declared in Scripture, and every life is precious in the sight of God. Let us boldly proclaim the truth that we are fearfully and wonderfully made, and let us work tirelessly to defend the vulnerable and uphold the value of every human life to the glory of God.

Serving Him,

Bro. Joey
