Hey Guys,
This Sunday, we’re diving into one of the most profound passages in the New Testament—The Great Commission (Matthew 28:16-20). Here, in Jesus’ final words to His disciples before His ascension, He delivers a powerful message that has continued to shape the mission of His Church for over 2,000 years.
We’ll explore three key aspects of this passage: Christ’s Authority, Our Assignment, and Our Assurance. Each of these gives us a deeper understanding of what it means to live on mission for Christ, driven by His authority and guided by His promise to be with us always.
Christ’s Authority: The Foundation of Our Mission
Jesus begins with a statement that anchors everything that follows: “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to Me” (v.18). This isn’t a temporary claim—Jesus is declaring His eternal rule over all creation, a rule that no power on earth or in the heavens can challenge. This authority is what empowers His followers to go forward with confidence, knowing that we serve the One who reigns supreme.
Our Assignment: Go, Make Disciples, Baptize, and Teach
The heart of the Great Commission is the call to “make disciples of all nations” (v.19). Jesus outlines our role clearly, and we’ll discuss each aspect this Sunday:
1. Going—stepping out of our comfort zones to reach others with the gospel.
2. Making Disciples—investing in others so they can grow and mature in faith.
3. Baptizing—inviting new believers into the community of faith.
4. Teaching—helping others learn to walk in obedience to Christ.
This assignment is not a suggestion; it’s a mandate, entrusted to every follower of Jesus. Our mission field includes our families, workplaces, neighborhoods, and even the far reaches of the earth. This Sunday, we’ll look at how we can respond faithfully to this call.
Our Assurance: Christ’s Presence
Jesus ends with an incredible promise: “I am with you always, even to the end of the age” (v.20). This assurance is the foundation of our hope and confidence. No matter where He sends us, no matter what challenges we face, Jesus is with us—empowering, guiding, and comforting us. We are never alone in the work He has called us to do.
Why This Message Matters
The Great Commission is not just a call for pastors or missionaries—it’s a call for every believer. In a world that desperately needs hope, truth, and purpose, Jesus calls each of us to share the life-changing message of the gospel.
So, whether you’re new to faith, considering the claims of Christ, or a long-time follower looking for renewed purpose, this message is for you. We’ll also share a clear presentation of the gospel and invite you to respond, whether for the first time or with renewed commitment.
Join us Sunday to explore the powerful call of Jesus, our mission to the world, and the assurance that we are never alone in it. Let’s embrace His mandate together.
